When RPGs borrow from strategy, and why it works

August 29, 2026 · Jonas Keller

The line between RPG and strategy is thinner than people think. A good turn-based fight, like the ones in Emberline Saga, is basically a puzzle with a story bolted on.

What makes it click is meaningful choice. If positioning, turn order, and status effects all matter, each battle becomes a small tactical problem. You're not mashing attack, you're solving.

The danger is when numbers overwhelm tactics. If you can just out-level every fight, the strategy evaporates. The games that stay interesting keep encounters tight enough that your brain still matters at high levels.

For strategy fans who think they don't like RPGs, I'd say try a tactical one. The planning you enjoy is right there, just dressed in a different coat.
