How to actually read a wave in tower defence
The biggest skill gap in tower defence isn't tower choice, it's wave reading. Good players know what's coming before it arrives and build for it, instead of panicking at the first armored unit.
Start by checking the preview. Nearly every decent game shows you the next wave's composition. Spend the planning phase looking at it, not at your gold. If a wave is mostly fast light units, you want splash and slow effects, not single-target burst.
Next, learn your choke points. The best defensive spot is rarely the one near your base — it's the longest path where you can stack damage. Build there early and let the map do work for you.
Finally, hold a reserve. Don't spend every coin the moment you have it. A small buffer lets you drop an emergency tower when a wave surprises you, and that one tower often saves a run.
Once you start thinking two waves ahead, the whole genre opens up. The games that felt random suddenly feel like a conversation.
