Why good controls matter more than deep systems on mobile

I've played strategy games with gorgeous systems that I quit within an hour, purely because the controls were miserable. On a phone, your fingers cover the screen, taps misfire, and a clumsy menu turns planning into a chore.

The best mobile strategy games design around the thumb. Big tap targets, gestures you can do without looking, and menus that don't bury the action two taps deep. Frontier Foundry, which we reviewed, nails this by making its most-used tools instant.

A deep game with bad controls just hides its depth behind frustration. I'd rather have a simpler game I can play fluidly than a complex one I fight with.

When you're trying out a new strategy title, give it a real test: play standing on a bus, one-handed if you can. If it still feels good there, it'll feel good anywhere.
